Hotly-anticipated collaborative affair between ex-Girls Aloud serial underdog Nicola Roberts and favela chic mastermind Diplo has arrived. A monster beat and a Justice-style anthemic chorus proclaiming “L.O.V.E dance to the beat of my drum” sets up a perfect introductory sentiment for Roberts to share with the world – this is my limelight and I’m no longer sharing it. See also: Girls Aloud? Who? Girls Allowed to do what? Go to hell? Cool.
“Don’t it make your heart go wild / how I’ve turned this whole thing round” she sings, and her transformation is definitely commendable, if not completely bizarre.
It’s well documented she didn’t have a great time in Girls Aloud, endearingly known as the ‘ugly, grumpy one’ or ‘chicken tikka face’ (just me then); she was bronzed out of all recognition, not that the camera was ever focused on her anyway.
She has shed her caked exterior, reinstated her natural locks (although, in the ‘Beat of My Drum’ video, her hairdresser has lovingly created a ‘do seemingly influenced by the long-eared Basset Hound) and is a rocking a shiny new, multi-coloured and slightly ghetto-fied vibe. She looks slightly uncomfortable in the video, drawing immediate comparison to Rebecca Black's pre-assembled Ikea flat-pack performance in the video to ‘Friday’.

But 'Friday' has almost 160 million views on YouTube - so what do I know, right?
Saying that, my only real reservation is with creative control – just how much of the ‘Beat of My Drum’ aesthetic is hers? It sounds supremely more Diplodocus than Girls Aloud. I suppose her debut solo effort Porcelain Heart will reveal all. Blow my reservations out of the water Roberts, I dares ya.
