Finding a tranquil and uncommercialised spot in the U.K for some well earned rest and relaxation is becoming harder to find by the day. However, Hillend campsite in Llangennith may just be your answer.
This tranquil hot spot not only attracts those with a mind for reading, hiking and basking on the beach, but an eclectic mix of surfers, canoeists and kite surfers. On the edge of Rhossilli Down, paragliders take off, visually exploring from above the adventures of rock climbing, pony trekking and all of the five golf courses in the area.
The lifeblood of the village is the Kings Head Pub (info@kingsheadgower.co.uk), which residents flock to in the evenings. The ambiance is warm and inviting and the food is fantastic too. The village also has an incredibly helpful and friendly surf shop, PJ's (pj@pjsurfshop.co.uk) so first timers can rent boards, wet suits or simple get information on the beach and tides.
Despite plenty of rainfall, the area fares better than most in Wales during the summer months with the last few years being scorchers! Swansea is a thirty minute drive away for shopping, galleries and museums. When the weather is poor, the campsite has a licensed shop and Eddy’s cafe offers a range on cheap and cheerful grub (and nationally makes the best chocolate milkshakes!!).
So whether it's exploring the many beaches and coves, taking up your choice of aquatic sports or having a BBQ on the beach this place is the ultimate summer retreat.
To get there by car, Llangennith is at the far end of the Gower peninsula. Travelling westbound along the M4, it's best to bypass Swansea and leave the motorway at junction 47. Take the A483, then A484, followed by the B4295 from Gowerton. The beach is well signposted and Hillend is 100 metres or so shy of the sand dunes.By public transport buses run occasional services from Swansea's Quadrant Station (0870 608 2608, (traveline.org.uk).
It just proves you don’t have to leave the U.K for a memorable holiday.
