Illuminance by Rinko Kawauchi

Illuminance is the newest of twelve photo books from photographer Rinko
Kawauchi. With a whole new series of previously unpublished photographs, the
artist has once again employed the milky palette and carefree composition so
known of her work to interweave fragments of the fragility of every day life, the
small wonders of a sometimes mundane existence and the fundamental cycles of
the natural world.

I always like to think there is something innately serendipitous about Kawauchi’s
work – light leaks and lens flare turn into achingly beautiful pieces of work time
after time (take her book Aila for instance). It could be then, that with the title
Illuminance, the book is perhaps the best testament yet to Kawauchi’s enduring
and radiant relationship with light and what it can do (or rather, what can be
done with it).

Shot over 15 years, the collection of photographs are glimpses of small moments
and silent illuminations that will resonate with the very essence of our own
memories and evoke in the viewer a feeling of nostalgia – we’ve all been to this
place in our childhoods, in our imaginations and in our dreams.

For anyone who simply appreciates the beauty that photography can distill -
Illuminance is a must buy.
